Having consulted a number of people, and done some preliminary research, I know that in order to create a high quality projection work I need to conduct some in depth research. Thanks to Steven Crichton for giving me the initial push in the right direction.
I spoke to Sandy Aman in the Cooper Gallery on May 4h about his work. He has made a projected piece wherein various faces are projected onto a large egg shaped object. It is similar to the work of Tony Oursler. The end result is an interesting effect, and it was worthwhile seeing this kind of work in person. He was kind enough to talk me through how the projection works, and that I would need a masking object to ensure that the projection only hits the surfaces I want it to. Whilst seeing this work, and its similarity to that of established artists like Oursler highlights the popularity of this technique in contemporary art, I need to work out how to stand out from the crowd if I create a projected installation.
The notion of heads and faces being projected onto objects is, to me, too popular. I have seen work like it in many places, however as an example, there is Tony Oursler, Sandy Aman (whose work is part of this years DoJ Undergrad Show – mere months before the Masters Show), and there was also another similar piece at last years show. These three alone prohibit me from taking my work in this direction. Also, as my goal is to create photorealistic 3d graphics, it would make no sense to create a similar work. Why spend months making something that looks like a photo, only to project it on to an object and have the viewer think that I merely created a photo projection piece in a similar manner to other artists.
However, I am still undergoing research into this field, which will be conducted fully in Semester Three. The areas that I am currently researching are:
There are seemingly limitless possibilities in this area. I need to work out exactly how I am going to use them. The key will be finding some kind of symbiotic relationship between the projection work and that of my other projects.
